Hello, I'm Shoimya Chowdhury

Hi! I'm a first year Master's student in Computer Science at the University of Maryland College Park, with a focus on Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval. I completed my Bachelor's in Computer Science at Michigan State University and went on to spend nearly three years at Raymond James Financial, where I earned the Rookie of the Year award by building solutions that boosted efficiency by 50% and saved countless hours of manual work. There is nothing quite like seeing your code help real people do their jobs better.

My journey has not always been linear. I came into this field navigating two different education systems as an international student, struggled early and finished strong, and somewhere along the way fell deeply in love with how language and technology intersect. What draws me to NLP and Information Retrieval is the challenge of making machines not just process information but truly understand and surface it in ways that are meaningful to people. That intersection of human language and intelligent systems is where I want to spend my career and eventually contribute to through research and academia.
